I don't play cata much accept for diddleing with each races features from time to time. the multiplayer is actually fairly bacanced, it is a strategy game after all. A tactic would be to find where there disadvantage points lie and take advantage of them. the beast have an infection beam that can infect most fighters and all frigates(I think but i'm not sure) wile the taww have a seige cannon. I'f your sawmtaww theres not too much you can do against the beast. Build mimics (they cannot be captured) and whatever other fighter/corvette you know the beast can't infect as well as a good lot of capital ships. Maximize your control points as much as possible with carriers and support modules. Keep a bunch of leaches on hand. i find it rather fun to steal RUs every so often with the leech mode. And finally, the cannon. What most people neglect most of the time is that depending on how far you want to fire the cannon it will be either week or strong. Fire it too close and you CS will take a heaping lot of damage from the shockwave. Fire it too far and it will run out of antimatter before it has a chance to detonate. When your ready to fire the cannon move to about half way into its range. there's a small percentage sighn somewhere on the reticle that will help you. This distance should be good enough to make a significant dent and keep you far enough from the blast to not get hurt. (actually i know it will because there was a mission where you have to do that.) As for the beast, well they have an upper hand already. the sawmtaww have a hard time capturing beast ships so usually players won't bother. build all you want, go wild with all of there features. BUILD HEAVY CRUISERS AND CARRIERS! they have infection beams. the more you infect the better a chance you have of winning. just be sure to keep some control points open for infection otherwise the beam will fail. Don't hesitate to use the beam on capital taww ships. it will hurt them severly but it will not capture them. I hope this helps you and welcom to paper starships

Ah...the Beast have essentially no advantage, Raven. The infection beam only captures 2 multibeams or a little pack of fighters at a time, and then it takes forever to recharge. The Somtaaw, once they have super-caps, can just pull out an immune fleet and have at the Beast. The beam also requires a decently short range. The Beast research tree requires captured ships, which means you have to charge in there and steal something even if you're not ready. It just has a whole host of problems, while the Somtaaw are pretty self-sufficient.

Cheers. Its good to see the different ways everyone has at using the beast. Ive only ever used it against taaw CPUs which to be honest isnt much of a challenge compared to a human. Anyone got any uses for alliiances? Beast/beast vs beast or taww. or beast /taaw vs beast or taaw or both?

You do indeed have to capture a ship, then retire it to obtain the tech. But the beast research tree doesn't require you to capture anything to win. Anything useful you get through infect is just a bonus. Just one example: In clan games with a beast/Taaw mixed team it is common to share important techs like repair by force-attacking an ally ship with cruise missiles or briefly un-ally and infect. A beast CS with EPA turned to production and workers healing it at the same time can produce fighters amazingly fast. BTW, the beast ships do have some advantages, such as higher speed and self-regeneration of health. The only Taaw ship I ever build as beast is the acolyte/missolyte. The rest I just retire for the cash or send on suicide missions. One of these days we're going to have to have a weekend Cata reunion game. I'll show you how long a dread lasts against a beast swarm. About 12 seconds Multibeams? I'd just use corvettes mixed with cruise missiles. That's one thing I really liked about Cata. Though the races were really different, overall it was pretty well balanced. Each strat has a counter if you think, recon and plan ahead.

I am pathetic at thinking that quickly, and when I do come up with a plan, it involves so much that it goes slowly and everyone else has time to own me. I'm not good at strategy games, despite how I want to be. Yes, it involves practice, but I haven't the time...
