Has anyone else worked on the Kuun-Lan? I've got a good start on it, but am finding the forward top section (command section) difficult to unfold. The central rib that connects the upper engines and the hanger module needs a new plan as well. It folds fine, but is structurally very weak and difficult to firmly connect to the hanger and engine fore and aft. I'm thinking of using a balsa or foam core for it to give it rigidity and extending the hidden core into the hanger and engine modules. Yes, I know it is also missing the support modules and the seige gun. The support mods are already printed, just tedious and not done yet. The siege is foldable but I still need to simplify it a bit. Here's what I have so far. Very rough test build, no reinforcement built in, no edge detailing, and my color ink cartridge ran low... hehe. As I said, this is just a proof-of-concept model so be nice. I know it's ugly ;D larger image here --> hw2.home.comcast.net/images/kuunlan.jpg

I started to do some work on a Kuun-Lan, but I was side tracked. All those modules make it a pretty difficult model to get together. Good luck with it, I hope it turns out well. You are off to a good start from what I can see.

the kuun-lan has been avoided by paperstarships community cos I've read it is a pain to unfold -like many cataclysmn ships- So I'm glad you did it. In fact, I think it must be a hard to fold model, isn't it?

It has been a difficult model so far, which is why I'm doing the rough build first. There are quite a few overlapping surfaces in the model that I am working on eliminating, and I'm editing the PDO's as I build each section.
One good thing about the model is that it is already modular - I haven't needed to chop it up into workable slices. With the good comes the bad, though, As I said in my first post, this has caused issues with structural integrity at the center rib section.
TheGlove -> no worries. I have learned a lot since my first model. I never meant that "signed" MBF to get posted... that was just a prank. Can't believe anybody even remembers that.
So, back to the difficulties with the command section. I've experimented with converting that section of the model to a solid-modeling format like SolidWorks or STL and then back to MQO to unfold. This makes it much easier to unfold as it gets rid of a lot of the troublesome internal overlaps. However, doing these conversions also erases the texture mappings.
Maybe I'm making it too complicated. I'm not much of a 3d artist. Any suggestions? I'm sure this has come up before with other Cata models.

I've had to actually cut away some of the overlapping parts on the Cata models that I've done. You can do it in Meta, but it's not the easiest to do. The peoblem is it makes the models something of a mess. But its doable. That's how I got the Clee-San to be buildable. I also had to chop the Destroyer. I started the Kuun-Lan and then stopped due to the complexity. I may go back to it though, since I've already done a lot of other ones. I'll do the starting version though, so we won't duplicate efforts.

I had a try at a Kunun Lan a while back and was a total bust!!
Well done. Looks good (although colour....I don't know)
(Oh! sorry just saw the bit about the ink).
Look forward to seeing a link!!
Anyway, in many cases ugly is good.....

Well, after reading this thread, I decided to take another hack at the Kuun-Lan. I think I've got the mesh in a form that will allow me to make a fodable model out of it. But there are so many parts that I'll have to break it down into smaller sections. Right now, I have the initial version of the ship, and I'm working on making an add-on to make the final version. Should be at least a few more nights of fiddling with it to make it buildable, but I'll let you know how its going.

Ah, someone's finally designing this ship! Great job, Ice! Keep it up I eagerly await it. Though I don't think the engine is that far above the front hull...you sure it's not upside down?

Oh, those ribs underneath are missing, presumably to be designed later. That's what looked odd. Thanks, Glove. I am now back in business, attempting the Beast Mothership to match this thing. Thank you for inspiring me, Ice.
