Nerath's off to MIT in September! No, I didn't intend this to be shameless bragging; more like obsessive happiness. I'm going off to college, possibly majoring in aerospace engineering or astronomy/astrophysics. I've been accepted, told MIT that I am indeed going to them in particular, and have told everyone else to go pick someone else instead of me. Kind of a creepy time in life, the summer before college is. All this anticipation alongside the dreaded "Crud, I'm leaving everyone I know" situation. But I'll survive, and I'll still be here to lord over all of you. And I'll hang paper starships from my dorm ceiling, and people will be weirded out. So much fun. So, just thought I'd do a little victory dance here just because. (For those of you who haven't heard of it (Riesstiu for one), MIT is Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It's a major tech school here in America, with a really good engineering program and research and all that jazz.)

Sorry I missed this earlier. Congratulations !!!
You know, while you're there you'll have access to a really excellent set of 3D model printers in the engineering lab. Just tell them you're making a prototype for a research project. ;D
In all seriousness, hope you enjoy yourself there. My daughter has her heart set on MIT as well. Please let us know how things go for you when you get there.

Thanks And yes, I will have access to lots of awesomeness... And you know that my dorm will be strewn with paper starships hanging from the ceiling. I'll definitely let you guys know what kind of awesomeness we're doing at the forefront of science How old is your daughter?

She's 12 going on 20. A bit of a nerd, like her dad, but much prettier than me She wants to be a scientist. Not sure exactly what kind yet. She's started talking about MIT when she was 8, and I've been saving my pennies ever since. If she has the drive to achieve something like that I won't be the one to stop her. Right now she's concentrating on smaller fish, though, like her school science fair.

Hey all. Nerath is at MIT now. Oy. Just thought I'd let you know that I still do pop on to see what's going on, though I have all this orientation stuff to deal with now.

Holy cow, I haven't been here in a while. Anywho. How to get in? Get good recommendations from your teachers (if you're still in school; if you're applying as an adult, I don't think this counts), spend a good amount of time making your essays nice, and include anything that makes you well-rounded in your app. MIT sees all kinds of math/science nerds. They want to see that you do more than that. If you took a lot of art classes, or you do dance, or you like literature, or something non-math/science, they want to know. Of course, you need to have done well in classes (if you're getting C's, that's bad) and on whatever standardized tests you took, but the latter isn't ALL that important, methinks. Want more specifics? Ask.

*disclaimer* not just random necroposting *disclaimer* I've just finished sending out college apps as well... with all luck I'll be hearing good news from MIT as well in a few days, the rest after the new year. but also on that note, the ridiculous and complicated application processes are also done.... meaning more free time for building fun things! Wish me luck , please, this next week? Thank you everyone. Hope to have good news to update soon. And also pictures/ models to post, now.
