I was talking with a friend about this a few weeks ago. I don't think it'd work as a film without chopping it to hell, but how about a mini-series?
I'd talk about it among my offline friends, but I'm the only Homeworld nerd among them. So, what do you guys think?

sounds interesting, i'd sign up for this. you can easily extract hw models, and animate them within 3d studio or some other program.
write more on your ideas pleasej

I know I've said it before, but it seems the problem with Homeworld translating into film/writing/cave paintings is the non-existent character development. I imagine it'd mostly be from the views of Karen and Fleet Intelligence, seeing as they're the only ones with real speaking parts. Maybe you'd get some short shots of the bums actually fighting the war, but only enough to break up bits of Karen floating in her fish bowl.

well, dialogs, like between the ambassador and kadeshi or bentusi could be arranged to move the plot forward, also battle chatter would be nice. of course amount of hard story and dialogues would be much smaller than in other machnima

Hmm, history and such could work for filler between battles. I imagine some of the lesser skirmishes (the Ghost Ship in the Sea of Lost Souls, the Diamond Shoals, etc.) wouldn't merit that much time, anyway.
I imagine too much focus on battle chatter would make it kind of inane. Just enough to make a point would probably be best ("There's too many of them! We can't track 'em all at once!" before the Multigun Corvette's debut). After all, the focus of Homeworld seems to be more on the collective experience rather than some plucky pilot's exploits. We could leave that part for that dreamy flight-sim I'll probably never see.

hmm... its true that as a film it would probably lose alot ... however, it might make a decent "mockumentary" - that is, include as much of the game's storyline as possible, with a narrator (probably fleet command) giving the background and play-by-play; a fictional documentary?
I've also read two or three well-scripted fanfic movie ideas. They still lost alot of the story, but one especially stuck with me as making the best of both story and characters; i'll try to find it.
It also may have potential as a (ex, 16 part) miniseries; adding small amounts of character development to each mission, all as separate episodes.
