Elmers is a PVA white glue - IIRC it comes in different strengths. I usualy use a white wood glue called Evo Stick. Like Elmers it can be thinned with water but is fairly thick.
Elmers is OK for general use. For heavy duty work such as gluing internal bracing and support I use a clear solvent glue called Uhu.
I don't print on card stock. The type I have tried maybe thicker but is soaks up ink and as a result the textures look blurred. I go with 120g weight matt white coated paper (A4 size). It costs £14.99 for 200 sheets but I think the results are sufficiently better to justify the cost.
And you can still glue card reinformnents and pannels inside to improve the strength. Plus the thiner paper fold better and - IMHO - looks cleaner.
Still, at the end of the day, the important thing is to use whatever material you personaly find works for you.
I hate - well not hate - but am sometimes irritated by hobby Nazis. Those who are intolerant of how others persue the hobby if it doesn't agree with their views.
The whole point is to have fun.
Keep trying. If the model doen't look right, have another go. Try a simple model first and take your time. try a model with well written and drawn instructions such as Ent E's Qwaar Jet for example, Gearz Assault Frigate or Ace's Kushan Cruiser (although one can be a bit more difficult for the novice).
Let us know what went wrong and maybe we can point you in the right direction.
