when i had to choose between the Cata or the HW2 continuation of HW i would choose Cata for sure... HW2 had a very sucky plot methinks... HW1 was better in ALL aspects, except graphics.

Couple of things:
Khar-Toba isn't necessarily the name of the prison ship the ancient Kushan crash-landed on Kharak. It's the name of city that grew outwards from the wreck.
The Homeworld manuel consistently uses the word module when refering to the Mothership's hyperspace drive mechanism. It also mentions that several hyperspace modules were built prior to the Mothership launch, to study the quantum waveform event.
There were at least three [Khar-Toba class] prison ships that crash-landed on Kharak. At least one (the modern Khar-Toba) had to have survived the entry into the atmosphere.
My beef with the Homeworld 2 plot is that it relies on too many meaning changes and coincidences to make it accurate with the rest of the Homeworld universe and common sense in general. I find it hard to presume that the Kushan would have secured their Far Jumper onboard a hastily built ship, identical to several dozen others, specifically designed not to be able to hyperspace(or else why use sublight engines?) and be basically giant cosmic arks. They had no idea where they were going, or even if there was a suitable planet available for the Exiles. And we are to assume that somehow, the one ship that's carrying the Far Jumper, is the only one to survive planetfall on an alien world, after crossing half the galaxy?
Even if we accept all the miracles that allowed the Khar-Toba to arrive on Kharak, the Mothership's usage of the Core is considerably suspect as well. The Kharakians built several test hyperdrives, which shows that the Core isn't needed to enter hyperspace. The actual drive used in the Mothership itself is a replica of the original(?) Core expanded twelve times to accomodate the Mothership's mass. The Kharaki did not "enlarge the containment field" of the original Core, as the Homeworld 2 backstory puts it. They dissected and took the Core apart, and built and exact replica multiplied twelvefold. The Core itself was presumably destroyed in the Burning of Kharak.
There is no logical or reasonable way to state that the original Hyperspace Core that the Kushan used in their battle with the Bentusi was the one that landed on Kharak, or the one that powered the Mothership.

Where is Requiem War? Is it finished or anywhere near so? Requiem war is not finished at all. The first version will include a total conversion of the first 3 missions of HW1 to HW2, but many ships are still being modelled and textured, and many team members are leaving due to real life issues. However, I hope we will get a HW1 with HW2graphics and HW2interface in some years.

Requiem War won't be an alternate HW1 sequel, it will be HW1...
