Hi everyone I am looking for a paper model of a Saber Class starship. I am new to the world of paper starships, but I've seen many models for sci fi and think they are really cool. Name: Saber Class Origin: Star Trek Picture(s): staryards.com/Downloads/Ships/Federation/3_TNG/Saber/Schematic/Schematic_Sabre.zipMesh:is available at www.trekmeshes.chstaryards.com/Downloads/Ships/Federation/3_TNG/Saber/3d/Saber_3ds.zipPreferences: I would love the standard Federation scheme as shown in movie clips. Scale should be on par with standard TNG ship models, it would be nice if it was reflected in the final model, slightly larger than the Defiant I believe....much smaller than the Galaxy class. But a small scale one would be fun for some things and a bigger one would be cool for display etc... I need this model for a roleplaying game. Thanks if anyone would like to tackle this.

If someone can't design it, is it possible to get someone to reduce the mesh down to where I could input it into Pepakura? Or at least tell me what is a good way to reduce the mesh.

well, delete these boxes that are the windows(the yellow ones), and then paint them manually.
cut the model in to some parts (engines, and the rest ?)

Yep I can prep it for you kreebo, but you'll have to dev it yourself, sorry. I've got a bunch of other stuff already underway. The mesh needs a fair bit of hammering, though the basic shape is pretty straight forward. It doesn't need reduction so much, more re-arranging. The hull and saucer sections are intersecting etc, are you familiar with PEP? add your own flaps etc, if I break it down into sections? or do you want one piece, and do all the cutting yourself?
I'm on the clock with a few things, have to give me a long week or so..?

However, Even an approximate for now would be very cool for gaming. Visuals always seem to help. I usually just play with Poser and Bryce for imaging. But this whole paper modeling thing caught my eye a few weeks ago. I used to own a hobby and gaming shop a few years ago and sold mostly plastic and resin kits. I am female which makes it all odder. But I love painting minis and building some terrain. I used to teach it at my shop. (Kreebo is an online persona keeps the IM creeps away pretty well.)

Aff! The saber is a beutiful starship but tall the meshes I have for it, they all cross eachother.
They came from the star trek mods from HW which I can try to deliver the link to when I get home.

No worries kreebo, I'll try to re-do the mesh for you so its as easy to cut as I can get it. It'll be a good starter subject in card Dev'ing. Have to agree with Raven, It is a good lookin' ship! Once the mesh is done, we can help you with PEP, probably draw the process out a bit, but we need more Dev's, and you'll get your model. I'm working on the mesh now, though, considering its a first for you. Q, Are you going to/Do you want to make it strickling in CARD? you mentioned basic? I ask because there's a few parts that will be .. 'challenging' to make ~ The dome sections on the front of the warp nacelle's for one. I'm happy to work the smaller parts, but (This'll raise a few eye brows) if your happy with adding a few small 'plastic' bitz, it'll be a LOT easier for you to assemble. Errr.. your description is a 9.9 on the weird shi..... spookOmeter. You've described a fem I met the other day... mmm.. anyway, creativity is gender none specific... hope you enjoy the hobby, it can be very additive, especially when you start to dev your own models. There's lotz of tuts around for Developing card models, if you haven't already been there, one of our members has some great stuff here. www.ericksmodels.com/paper/paper.html

Glad to know there are others out there. I am not opposed to adding bits and pieces. The model itself is kind of cool and I am surprised there is only one resin model rendition of it out there. I need to make a table top scale representation and of course a model sized version for RPG's. My own mods to the ship would have been a detachable bridge and drive section to make the top center section separate with it's impulse drive system. An emergency split like the saucer separation. Leaving the saucer and the warp drive section behind. Thanks very much for working the mesh down. I will have to learn how to do that, but right now I don't have studio max on my system to even look how to do that. I like the look of the Saber over the Defiant Class as it maintains some of the original "Trekness" while adding a newer sleeker style. Some of my gamers are grumbling about the small ship and were hoping for a Defiant class or even a Miranda, but I laughed and said, let's see what the engineers can do for it before you blow it up teasing some space anomaly. They will be surprised as it will be changing as they cobble together some unique technologies from around the galaxy. Way cool Gearz I thank you for taking the time. I am sure I will have fun working with the tutorials and some forum members on this project.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! ;D
It's beautiful, I can't wait to try it. Yes I wondered when I saw it if it was possible to do a card model, but still it will actually give me a 3 dimensional material idea of what the ship kinda looks like. I could try making it out of a light sculpting material a section at a time if I decide to go that route.
Again thanks so much. I hope it was an interesting endeavor for you and not just a royal pain in the arse. I will walk myself through all that information you posted as well. I made sure I bought plenty of ink for some other cardstock projects too. I like making Worldworks Games terrain and buildings. I use a Canon IP3000 and I found some decent ink that is inexpensive on Ebay.
Thanks again. And yes I grabbed those files and will treat them like gold.

That rocks Gearz. O to 2 in such a short time. Oh boy those flaps on your cool ship beta are tiny. Any suggestions to help fold those creases. I score those lines for buildings and other things but not sure about this. The rounded parts I am not sure about. What do you do with the zigzaggy marked flaps? Do you cut them that way or fold them as best you can?
The other model is tiny, cool. I can mess about with the scales for both to make what I need.

Hey kreebo
Re ~ Flaps..
SIZE ~ There's an option in PEP to increase the size of ALL flaps, on the top menu [Configuration] ~ [Flap Configuration] you can adjust them to any set size, = CAUTION might cause problems fitting some parts) OR click on the [Edit flap] button on the left hand menu = (all the flaps on the dev will turn red) then LEFT click on any individual flap and a pop-up box will give you the option to adjust the size of just that flap.
Zigzaggy flaps ~ errr.. If you mean the saw tooth type flaps? yep you need to cut them as they are marked = In general any linear /straight edge/part only needs one flap, they start/end were a fold or some sort of joint is intended to go, lots of / or spiky flaps means the part is curved or attaches to a curved part? did that make sense? That's where a good mesh to start with becomes a make or break. ~ On your sabre's case there was a bunch of parts that weren't joined neatly point 2 point / line 2 line, they just intersected each other, I just chopped the mesh so the parts would mate up. So some of the flaps don't exactly match the shape of the other part.
~ Have a look at the part that makes the front 'deck' of the shuttle bay recess, in the saucer! All those spiky flaps weren't necessary to join the parts, but that's how the mesh was made, they can be corrected, but not in PEP you have to export to bitmap editor = pain. Or RE work the original 3D mesh.
FOLDS ~ yep, again the starting mesh was a mess. I eliminated as many of the unnecessary fold lines that I could, but it still looks like a spiders web, especially the side of the hull section ?? Hard to call, I'd probably forget about trying score most of the hull lines ( on the sides) and maybe just glue the flaps into position?? might work? ~ err.. one proviso, the little ?? "quarter deck" part ( rear top hull) needs to fit on to a square / straight sided part of the hull, so maybe that line needs to be scored.
hope this helps
