Ah...well, now I see your point, Tony. I've never been in a giant group RP. Nor have I worn full costume (I did cosplay once, but that's not RPing.). I've RPed online, but that's a lot like writing a collaborative story. And, of course, I've played RPGs.
I think the people who ended up in an asylum or whatever were mentally unstable from the beginning. I generally refuse to blame RPing, video games, or other fictional means for the stupid and/or dangerous things that typically sane people have done.
Er, back to table-top gaming. So have you guys given up the idea, or what's the current thoughts on the project?

i think it would be a good idea to just have 2d top views, because who can be bothered to assemble 70 tiny scouts? also has anyone played railway rivals, a board like that would be good.
blame canada!!

I'm from America and I still don't understand.
You'd be surprised, Glove. Some people buy tons of figurines for tabletop games and paint them all by hand. Really.

I imagine painting them to be the most fun, while actually playing... And you don't need to be american to understand, but knowing a certain movie helps... EDIT: Linky hidden in message...

depending on the size of the pieces used in a table top game - say 6cm for destroyer size, 10cm for cruiser and carrier - it wouldn't be that difficult to carve the basic shape from balsa wood and add panneling detail, turrets etc from stiff card. Or alternatively to build up from laminated layers of plastic card.
All you need to do is build one that is "right" and then use it as a "master" to cast as many as you need.
Its fairly simple to make a mould using LTV (low temperature vulcanising) silicone rubber. Then cast the model either using a two part polyester resin or white metal.
I made a master a few years ago of the small 1/2500 scale Enterprise A kit released by Ertl and built up a small Federation fleet, including using the parts to mke varients such as dreadnaughts, destroyers and ships like the Reliant.
I'm not suggesting the models would be that accurate but as they would be small, it wouldn't be possible to get that much detail on them. The trick would be painting them to look like the ship they represent.
There are plenty of reference photos available and failing that you can use Deep Exploration or Pepakura to get a better idea of the shape (or simply look at the larger paper models).
The beauty of casting is that once you hve put the time in to get the model right, getting a whole lot of the same ship is easy.
Small - fighter etc - ships would be difficult and best reprsented by a card squadron marker.
Of course you could so what some gamers do and have two games running. game one is capital ships - frigates, destroyers and cruisers - duking it out. Game two is fighters. So when the markers in game one representing enemy squadrons come into contact, you move to the second game where you have larger models of the individual fighters and resolve that combat.
Its a holiday weekend in the UK next week. if I have time I'll have a go at carving a couple of HW ships - maybe a Qwaar jet and an Avatar. Maybe a Vanaar Jet as well. Either in balsa or plastic card. Give 'em a lick of paint and then I'll try to post photos.
I'll aim for the Qwaar Jet and Avatar being 9 or 10cm and the Vanaar Jet about 12cm.
I appreciate that those do not reprsent the scale comparison for the ships but in gaming terms the model is simply a representation and no reflective of the true scale.

the thread was deleted though.
and why not make the whole thing out of paper? that was the origional idea (MY IDEA) anyway.

nerath, whats so surprising aout painting them by hand? a single box of 16 troops costs A$50 (£18), so of course you would go to the effort of painting them!!!!
