Whilst trawling through the archives at Starshipmodeller I came across this starshipmodeler.net/contest4/ss_s16.htm which you may find interesting. Built from plastic back some time when HW first came out.

Its scratchbuilt. Not by me though. Presumably from plastic card and scrap pieces from other plastic kits.

I'm working on one. So far only the engine module built.
I've scaled up your original paper model so the finished item should be about 40cm long.

well if the a ship could be turned into a good CAD format file, something that MasterCAM could read, I could use my school's computers to make some toolpaths and have our cnc machines crank out an injection mold casting that we could fill with a resin and then paint. Note: the ship would have to be actually castable though, so the geometry whould have to be rather simple, some thing like the kushan ion frig should work perfect, i just have to figure out the process to get it into mastercam.

There are new mastering hardware being develped all the time.
Starship modellers ran a thread the other day concerning $30,000 device that can produce fully formed shapes to design from 3D mesh data. They can even be made in colour.
I'll dig up the website and post it here.
The models max size is about 6 inches and I don't know the unit cost per model.
But imagine being able to send them a properly formated CD ROM of, say, a Taiidan Ion Cannon Frigate in Yellow/Red Team colours and get a fully formed one back in the post.
Hell, if it works and I had the money I'd buy the machine and set up in business myslef.
Big IF there.......

ah i could see it now, mass produced little tiny fleets of plasitic heavy cruisers with moving turrets. Although they wouldn't have paper's super cool crumpling ability but you could still throw em at people ;D

the best part about having one would be printing out little tiny versions of the printer, so you could say you had more than one.
