Tachyon - The Fringe

Recently bought this game on the Novalogic banner.

If anyone else has it, have they had problems getting the single player mode to work?

The "button" for single player refuses to respend to the mouse pointer. Otherwise, all the other functions seem Ok.

Before I ring the manufacturer helpline it'd be useful to know if this is a common problem with the game.

Got the game, never had any significant problems with it.

Took disk back. Got replacement. Works fine. First one was clearly defective...

And now the question has to be - can the meshes for ths ships be extracted.

Some of the designs like the Bora Cruiser or the Galspan Archangel Heavy Fighter would make a great paper moelling project.

Indeed. Or Alpha Starbase .

The ship designs are awesome...






...but there is no online support from Novalogic at all and little to none fan support - Normally, a modding community would know if ships can be extracted and how, but I could find none.

Old doesn't have to mean bad or unpopular. Look at Wing Commander. No new games for years but still a big fan base (even with the movie a few years back tarnishing the original concept).

Tachyon falls into the "fun" catagory. Not as "Flight Sim" as Starlancer. Not as concerned with physics and relaitic inertial effects as IW2. Far less thought needed that our favourite Homeworld. Not as sloooooow as X Beyond the Frontier or X2.

Tach is a straight up shooter and works well in that category. Plus the main character is voiced by Bruce (Evil Dead) Campbell who is always good for laugh!

Plus it runs on all my PCs - even the geriatric 2 year old Packard Bell which crashes every time I even OPEN the Homeworld 2 pack let alone try to load and run the game.

Plus it has one of the best flight manuals in any comparable game I've played including the Homeworld series.

And best of all. Its CHEAP. Picked up a copy for £2.99 at my local HMV

hey hey hey! a Tach thread !

Tachyon online Multi is STILL ACTIVE to this very day!

Base Wars and Arena still has a very dedicated community.

if you need any help i have a site dedicated to the game and have all the mods you would ever want.

also since novalogic has decided not to update the game ( last update was in 2000)

some dedicated and talented ppl in the community have taken the challenge to provide player made maps and ships mods.

also we have a patch that removes things like the sunlight and improves the performance of the game online, as well as making it possible to play w/o the cd.

if you like Tachyon i HIGHLY recommend giving it an install and getting ONLINE ingame.

Base Wars last night had about 15 players ( dont laugh)
the game lasted 7 hours.

fastest game in a clan match was 17 minutes !

so if you want intensity look no farther than your local Novaworld server.

oh and by the way i would LOVE to have a set of paper ships for Tach and all of the community will RAVE !

the community has dwindled, MOST of the major clans have moved on to other games, but the core of whats left is still dedicated and will gladly welcome new players.

I help out noobs all the time ( just dont get too cocky, lol)

by the way there has been problems lately with the lobby reporting the # of players lately.

sometimes it will say "4" players or sometimes "0" players no matter how many ppl are actually ingame.

just enter anyway youll probably find us !

Can you re-post the Tachyon forums link? I tried it but was timed out each attempt!

For a straight fighter sim, no extensive career building and trading, Tachyon really scores high. Plus it has one of the better manuals in pdf form.

Had some real control problems using the joystick but when I switched to using the mouse everything become smooth....

The only real challenger is the fighter sim stakes is Freespace 2.

You really need to venture in to the online portion of Tachyon.

its nothing like 1 player.

there are 2 games online.

by the way, the tachyon lobby link i put up in the previous post does work, i just put it there so you could see what the online lobby screen looks like.

ok back to explaining Tachyons online games;

Base Wars involves the 2 factions in the game ;
namely Galspan and Bora.

each has their own base, and the maps are usually divided up into 3 sectors, Galspan, Bora, and a common sector in the middle.

the mid sector is where alot of tthe action happens.

basicly you "mine" crystals and fly your "credits" home and your base and your ship gains experience.

you progress through technology levels, aquiring new weapons and equipment at each "Tech Level" ( 1-10)

the object is to get to tech 10 where you get access to the nuke weapons Helios Bombs and you drop 25 of those on their Life Support and win the game.

Dogfights are fast and furious, as well as defending your base from attackers who attack your "credit plants" that appear on your base as you mine credits.

the other online game is called ARENA.
its your basic head-to-head deathmatch where you kill everything you see and try to get the most kills in 20 minutes before the server resets.

its a good area to practice ships, dogfighting,and weapons so that in base wars you become a better pilot.

the ppl in tachyon can become your best friends and your hardest opponent , and as in any game, theres a few bad apples but dont let that steer ya away!

Tachyon community is a very close knit group of people.


The ships in multi are much faster and stronger than any of the ships in single player so if you do manage to get online be ready for a shock!

you may think your a "hot pilot" but multi will melt all of that away fast, lol.

you may find yourself re-learning many aspects of flight .

your game will need to be patched to improve performance because Novalogic dropped support and hasnt made a patch since 2000!

On a technology issue, any particular preferences?

From a modelling position, I'd love to be able to build a Bora Warhammer heavy assault fighter as well as a Galspan Poseidon Bomber, Pegasus Interceptor and the Archangel heavy fighter.

If the meshes can be accessed then the Star patrol Enforcer is a must. As is the Bora Leviathan, the Galspan Carrier, Corvus Interceptor, Bora Cruiser, Galspan Destroyer.......

PS anyone reckon that some of the station designs were borrowed by the Andromeda design team for the "Drift Stations.
